The
operating room (OR) consists of two components, the control room and the OR.
The control room is where the recording and the monitoring of the OR take place.
The OR has been constructed to replicate the dimensions of a military DEPMED
field deployable operating room. In an exercise, the OR can be configured as
such. Depending on the particular exercise, the OR can also be reconfigured
with minimal effort to simulate a hospital emergency room or an intensive care
unit (ICU). The OR is equipped with oxygen, nitrogen, and vacuum lines that
are accessible through wall-mounted outlets. These are used to drive some of
the respiratory and anesthesia equipment found in the OR. In addition, the OR
has two ceiling mounted cameras and microphones to record exercises for later
analysis. The cameras are remotely steerable from the control room.
The OR has two patient simulators: the Laerdal SimMan Universal patient simulator and the MedSim Eagle Patient Simulator. Also located in the OR are a Bronchoscopy Simulator and a MedSim UltraSim ultrasound training simulator.
Courses taught in the OR include an Introduction to Surgery course for 3rd year medical students, and an airway management workshop for the Nurse Anesthetist program.
