Laparoscopy Simulator

The Surgical Simulation Laboratory has the virtual laparoscopic interface by Immersion Inc. This device is used in the LapSim laparoscopic trainer by Surgical Science. This trainer helps develop and practice some of the basic skills required in laparoscopic surgery. The Virtual Laparoscopic Interface tracks the motion of a pair of surgical instruments through three-dimensional space. Each sensored instrument handles includes 5 degrees of freedom. These degrees of freedom are the pitch and yaw motions that allow each surgical tool to pivot about its insertion point, insertion and retraction, spinning about its insertion axis, and the open-close motion of the tool handle.
