This simulator teaches students some of the basic skills of vascular anastomosis. A monitor generates stereo images of a severed vessel. A mirror reflects the image to appear close to his hands. The student interacts with the virtual vessel through two Phantom haptic interface units (one for each hand). The Phantom is made by Sensable Technologies. This simulator can be configured to display vessels and suture needles of various sizes for varying levels of difficulty. |

The
system is housed in a custom-built console. A Silicon Graphics Octane computer
is used to render the environment. Stereo images are generated. The user must
wear pair of CrystalEyes shutter
glasses to see this effect. An Intel-based PC is used to drive the haptics.
The haptic interface units have been modified to accept a variety of different
surgical instruments. These include scalpel, forceps, and needle drivers.
